ABSTRACT
The viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) level in plasma or serum of type 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infected patients has become an important disease progression marker. A descriptive study of the microorganisms frequency infected 200 Cuban HIV-1 patients with high viral loads was achieved. The viral loads were determined by Nuclisens system and the CD4 + T lymphocytes count by flow cytometry. The HIV-1 viral loads ranged from 61,000 to 830,000 cp/mL and the median was 150,000 cp/mL. The microbiological studies showed that
Streptococcus group D (13%), followed by
Streptococcus group A (5%),
Pseudomonas aeruginosa and
Staphylococcus aureus (3%) were the predominant isolates in respiratory samples. The 8% of the analyzed sputa were positive to Acid Fast Bacilli. A 13% of cerebrospinal fluid samples were positive to the presence of
Cryptococcus. Giardia lambia and
Isospora belli (3% each) were the most frequent parasites found, followed by
Fasciola hepatica, Entoameba histolitica, Entoameba coli and
Criptosporidium parvum (1% each). The highest positivity of the analyzed samples was associated to a CD4 + T lymphocytes percentage lower than 240 cell/µL. No pathogenic microorganisms were isolated from patients with CD4 + T lymphocytes counts between 560-746 cell/mL.
