ABSTRACT
Introduction: The secondary spontaneous pneumothorax is the presence of air in the pleural space caused by diseases of the lung parenchyma. Although many patient resolve in less than 2 weeks of conservative treatment, a recurrence rate is estimated between 40-56%.
Case Report: It is presented a 70-year-old woman, smoker, with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and having been subject to 3 minimum pleurostomies who was attended in Abel Santamaría Cuadrado Surgical Clinical Hospital, with dyspnea and pain at the tip of the side in the left hemithorax of three days of evolution. Spontaneous pneumothorax secondary to COPD was diagnosed, Low Minimum Pleurostomy was performed and one week later, thoracotomy. In the surgery room, he is treated with bronchodilators, antibiotic therapy and treatment of underlying diseases. Before a new picture of respiratory insufficiency it became necessary to intervene again surgically.
Conclusions: pneumothorax is a condition that can deteriorate the patient’s health in a short time. Acting quickly and accurately constitutes a cornerstone in patients`survival. The possibility of recurrence must always be taken into account.
