ABSTRACT
Actinomyces israelii is an anaerobic, gram positive, non-sporulated, acidresisting,
normal commensal of the gastrointestinal tract, but may be related
to infections and pelvic abscesses. Most of the patients are colonized and
are asymptomatic. It produces nonspecific symptoms and an ambiguous
picture, making its diagnosis complex. Pelvic actinomycosis is one of the
most infrequent presentations, with few reports in the literature.
Actinomyces israelii infection is described as a complication associated with
chronic use (over 5 years) of the intrauterine device.
