ABSTRACT
Introduction: spinal cord trauma is a frequent cause of death and disability, which causes severe physical and psychological damage, and generates huge economic costs. Objective: to determine the clinical-surgical characteristics of patients admitted for spinal trauma in the hospital “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima” of the province of Cienfuegos. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on a series of patients hospitalized for spinal trauma at the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima”, in the years 2013 to 2018. The study universe was made up of 87 patients. Sociodemographic, clinical and surgical variables, among others, were analyzed. Statistical processing was performed from SPSS 21.0 for better representation of the results. Results: the highest number of patients was between 31 and 45 years (40.2%) with a clear predominance of men (75.9%); 43.7% of the cases were related to traffic accidents (56.3%) of the patients received surgical treatment. There were three deaths (3.45%). Conclusions: young adults and male sex predominated. The traffic accident was the main etiology of trauma in young people, the cervical region was the most injured and there was a need for surgical treatment in more than half of the patients. A lower frequency of complications and a very low lethality were observed.REFERENCES
