ABSTRACT
Background: Health care-associated infections are a serious issue regarding public
health, due to the impact in morbidity, mortality and hospitality costs.
Objective: To determine the prevalence and microbiological characteristics of health
care-associated infections in the High Specialty Regional Hospital of Yucatan, Mexico.
Material and Method: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was done from
January to December 2017. The total cases of health care-associated infections documented
by the epidemiology department were selected, according to the NOM-045.
We obtained cultures and antimicrobial susceptibility testing from the microbiology
department of High Specialty Regional Hospital of Yucatan, Mexico.
Results: A total of 225 cases of health care-associated infections were identified,
obtaining a rate of 7.25/1000 days of hospital stay. The medical service with highest
prevalence was Internal Medicine with 67 cases (29.7%), and the most frequent infection
site was catheter associated-urinary tract infections with 64 cases (28%). We obtained
microbiologic cultures in 206 patients, of which 75.7% were gramnegative bacteria,
of these,
E. coli was predominant with 61 cases (29.6%).
Conclusion: The epidemiological and microbiological characterization of health
care-associated infections is fundamental for the development of preventive strategies
aimed at reducing their impact on public and institutional health since they are a
dynamic phenomenon over time, even within the same hospital or hospital service.
