ABSTRACT
Introduction: corruption, grand, petty or political, covert or overt, permeates all strata of society and has become the operating system of many individuals, organizations and governments including the health sector.
Objectives: analyze and report experiences fighting corruption, and develop recommendations regarding results, consequences and lessons learned when combating corrupt leaderships and practices.
Development: the problem of corruption is defined, a literature search on corruption and health is conducted, six work experiences are reviewed and information is synthetized to develop recommendations. No health system is perfect, all have deficiencies; however, what health sectors and poor and vulnerable people need the most, are people willing to address corruption as a lifetime attitude and project, since all it takes for corruption to triumph in health systems, is good people who do nothing about it.
Conclusions: there is a direct correlation between corruption and health that creates one of the biggest impediments to improve the wellbeing of people around the world.
