ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the characteristics of the factors associated with diabetic retinopathy
in patients aged 50 years and older in Cuba.
Methods: An epidemiological, descriptive, cross-sectional investigation was carried out, which
took the rapid survey of avoidable blindness conducted in Cuba in 2016, which included
diabetic retinopathy validated by the World Health Organization. A database was prepared
where all diabetics were taken and patients with and without retinopathy were compared
according to the associated factors.
Results: Age, sex and previous ophthalmologic examination did not show a difference
between the two groups. In the diagnosis of diabetes the age was < 60 years; p< 0.001; OR:
2.10 (1.28 to 3.47); the time of evolution of the disease ≥ 10 years; p< 0.001; OR: 2.53 (1,72
to 3.73). Random blood glucose in capillary blood was ≥ 7.7 mmol / L; p< 0.001; OR: 2.74
(1.60 to 4.68) and the type of insulin treatment p< 0.001; OR: 4.53 (2.76 to 7.43).
Conclusion: It is concluded that in diabetics 50 years of age and older in Cuba, the risk of
developing diabetic retinopathy is not associated with age, sex, or the annual fundus
examination. The risk is increased if diabetes is diagnosed before 60 years old, if there is
uncontrolled glycemia and if the disease is 10 years old and more.
