Metabolic alterations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection

ABSTRACT
There are approximately 2.1 million children living with the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Highly effective antiviral therapy
(HEART) has decreased HIV-related mortality in both children
and adults. What was once a progressive and fatal infection
is now a chronic disease with a longer life expectancy. Direct
damage from HIV, chronic inflammation, premature aging of the
immune system, co-infections, HEART and lifestyle can cause
different systemic disorders. Children with HIV has been preseting
multiple endocrine disorders due to longer time of exposure to the
virus, more aggressive treatment and longer survival. This article
mentions the main metabolic disorders associated with HIV and
the importance of its detection in the pediatric population.
