Polypharmacy and potential drug´s interactions in the elderly: a controversy in the prescription

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The high use of medications in the elderly is associated with factors that lead to improper use.Objective: To characterize the presence of polypharmacy and drug combinations suggestive of potential drug interactions in the elderly who consume medicines.
Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of series of cases and therapeutic scheme with elements of practical consequences. There were researched 130 individuals consuming any medications, who wanted to participate from consultations located in Primary Care and hospital institutions in Cienfuegos province during the second semester of 2017. It was taken into account the number of medicines of regular consumption in the last year, demographic variables, comorbidity, type of prescription, pharmacological groups and simultaneous consumption of medicines.
Results: It was possible to verify the presence of polypharmacy, being predominant the consumption of 10 drugs and even more in third age males and fourth age females, 47 associated with a high rate of comorbidity (61.8 %) and 106 potential drug interactions by combination of drugs frequently used by the elder that self-medicates (81.5 %) being non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs the most used pharmacological group.
Conclusion: The controversial elements during the prescription process were: polypharmacy, self-medication, comorbidity and the association of possible IMP what evidence the irrational use of medicines. It was found that the high-consumption and lack of understanding by prescribers of general elements of pharmacology threaten the quality of life of the elderly.
