ABSTRACT
Introduction: The easy access to medicines allows their storage at home, where it should be guaranteed the conditions that will keep the quality and that are not always known by the population.
Objective: To identify practices and knowledge about the storage of drugs that the inhabitants of La Primeavera neighbourhood, in Santiago de Cali, Colombia have.
Methods: A cross-sectional study, in which one person per house participated. It was applied a survey with demographic questions about knowledge and practices used for the storage of medicines in the house.
Results: 135 people were surveyed; 96% stores medications at home; 44% claimed to have knowledge about drugs and 57% stated that when storing keep them out of the reach of children. The 17%, 24% and 5% responded correctly on the conditions of refrigeration temperature, environment and humidity for proper storage respectively. The 64% affirmed that reads storage conditions in the medicine package, and 81% that the place where they are stored is the bedroom. It was found by logistic regression that answering correctly the temperature for storage is associated with having knowledge on the topic, responding appropriately the storage humidity and having higher levels of schooling.
Conclusion: The majority of the inhabitants of La Primavera neighborhood in Santiago de Cali store medicines in their homes without knowing the proper conditions and appropriate places for conservation, which favours the improper use, self-medication, and the development of vulnerabilities that increase the risk of adverse events.
