ABSTRACT
Introduction: The intravenous therapy is an important therapeutic and diagnostic procedure, widely used as part of the nursing practice in hospital care. This procedure presents high risk in the short term and the possibility for complications associated with secondary health problems derived from this therapy. Objective: To identify prevalence and factors associated with local complications for the case of peripheral intravenous therapy in patients hospitalized in a clinical neurology and medical clinic department of a public teaching hospital.
Methods: Cross-sectional, exploratory and descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, with systematic observation and search of secondary data available in the clinical records of 63 patients hospitalized in a public teaching hospital. Data were collected from January to March 2015 and used for statistical analysis with the version 19.0statistical package for social sciences.
Results: The prevalence of phlebitis was 25.4%, infiltration represented 15.9% and hematoma, 11.1%. The majority of the patients in the study were in therapy within the maximum interval of 48 hours. At the time of observation, the catheters were mostly connected with polifix (n= 58, 92.1%). Edema, pain, discomfort and erythema were identified around the insertion of the catheter in 16 (25.4%) of the participants.
Conclusions: The prevalence of complications for intravenous therapy was high, especially for phlebitis, infiltration and hematoma. There were differences between the prevalence rates of the clinics in relationship with the change interval and type of peripheral catheter.
