ABSTRACT
Introduction: According to the WHO, the Caesarean Index should be 15-19%. In Mexico, since 2000 it has increased 33.7% in the public sector and 60.4% in the private sector. In the Cochrane review, «Continuous support for women during childbirth» reaffirms: increase in spontaneous vaginal delivery, decrease in the use of intrapartum analgesia, the rate of caesarean sections and instrumented delivery.
Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between psychoprophylaxis and continuous emotional support to reduce the caesarean index.
Material and methods: We evaluated 380 women with active pregnancy and active phase of labor at the Nuevo Sanatorio Durango in the period from June 2015 to June 2016. The evaluation included the presence of continuous emotional support, psycho-prophylaxis, use of pharmacological treatments and non-pharmacological for pain control and its correlation with the caesarean index.
Results: The implementation of psychoprophylactics favored emotional support, reduced use of oxytocin and analgesics, decreasing the rate of caesarean section.
Conclusions: Psychoprophylaxis and continuous emotional support decrease the use of oxytocin, decreasing the percentage of caesareans.
