ABSTRACT
Objective: demonstrate how Fidel Castro Ruz always had in the forefront of his mind the idea of training humanistic and internationalist doctors with solidarity and a holistic cultural perspective that provides them the capability to confront any health problem in their communities.Materials and Methods: the study based upon the logical, historic method and the systematized analysis of different bibliographic sources - articles, speech excerpts, and writings in which the Commander in Chief expressed his strategic thoughts on the development of public health–constitutes the investigative antecedents to understand how our historic leader defined the physician and how these ideas coincide with those of his teacher, our apostle, the national hero of Cuba José Martí.
Results: the analysis showed that Fidel Castro always had in mind the ethical and humanistic values that should characterize professionals in the health sector, the responsibility of the State in this regard, and the importance of General Integral Medicine.
Conclusion: the study showed that the true history of Cuban public health began after the triumph of the Revolution in January 1, 1959, with some exceptions, and that its qualitative development, its true social function, cannot be explained in the field of prevention, services, research, academia, humanism and international solidarity without acknowledgement of the strategic thought process of our historic leader Fidel Castro Ruz.
