ABSTRACT
Introduction: Many authors have discussed the relevance of secondary stabilizers in scapholunate instability, specifically regarding dorsal intercarpal ligament which has proven to be of great importance for scapholunate stability during acute injury, preventing interval widening, scaphoid flexion and lunate extension. However, there is still controversy in some details of its gross anatomy.
Objective: To determine gross anatomy of the dorsal intercarpal ligament insertions over the scapholunate complex in a cadaveric model.
Material and methods: 10 cadaver wrists were dissected and the anatomic features of the dorsal intercarpal ligament were recorded.
Results: Dorsal intercarpal ligament shows constant insertions over the scaphoid and lunate. Scaphoid insertion area is triangular and luante insertion is square; the latter is constantly bigger.
Conclusions: Dorsal intercarpal ligament insertions areas over scaphoid and lunate are constant both in shape and area. We should recognize it as a site of great anatomic and pathologic relevance and engage it as such during imaging and direct examinations and also for reconstruction procedures.
