ABSTRACT

To plan orthodontic treatment it is important to know the reason for the patient's treatment. Material and methods: The study sample was 501 clinical histories of the archives of the archives of the Especialidad en Ortodoncia of the Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit, from the year 2012 to 2017. The variables were sex and the reason for consultation for which they went to the clinic. The data was tabulated and the statistics were performed on a Microsoft Office Excel sheet. They were grouped according to the reason for consultation by which they were presented and also classified according to the type of reason in: aesthetic, functional, health, psychological, necessity and others. Results: The average age was 15.3 years, 88.2% presented for orthodontic consultation due to aesthetic reasons, 8.58% due to chewing function, 2.59% for another reason, 0.34% felt the need to perform the treatment and 0.19% for health. In the female gender, 88.78% of women sought orthodontic treatment for aesthetics, 7.37% to improve their masticatory function, 3.2% had other reasons, the need for treatment and for health they presented 0.32% each. In men, the main reason for treatment with 87.30% was for aesthetics, 10.58% for improving their masticatory function, 1.58% for other reasons and 0.52% for health. Conclusion: the main reason for seeking attention is for aesthetics, followed by the function.
