Sigmoid volvulus in the Juarez Hospital of Mexico City: Twenty years of experience

ABSTRACT

Sigmoid volvulus is a frequent cause of bowel mechanical obstruction in our Hospital. Between April 1985 and March 2006, 67 patients were seen at the Juárez Hospital of México. There were 49 men and 18 women, the age ranged from 17 to 91 years. Nonoperative reduction was successful in 11 cases and 56 underwent emergency laparotomy. Elective surgery was performed in 8 patients after nonoperative reduction. When a sigmoid volvulus in identified, an initial attempt of nonoperative reduction in indicated in patients without signs of peritonitis or gangrene. Emergency laparotomy should be performed in patients with failure of nonoperative reduction, or when signs of peritonitis or gangrene are present.
