ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the efficacy of fine needle aspiration biopsy in the diagnosis of
the salivary glands diseases and their relationship with the final histopathological result.
Material and Method: A retrospective, descriptive and transversal study done
from January 2017 to June 2018. Two groups of patients were formed: the group with
disease of the submandibular gland and the second with disease of the parotid gland.
The estimation of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and accuracy was performed
for patients who had a positive aspiration biopsy.
Results: The sensitivity of the aspiration biopsy to establish a diagnosis was 36.3%,
while the specificity was 40%, the positive predictive value was 57.1% and the negative
predictive value was 22.2%. The accuracy of the aspiration biopsy compared with
the pathology result was 37.5%.
Conclusions: The aspiration biopsy has wide range results of specificity and sensitivity
due to the lack of standardization of cytological results and the vast cytomorphological
variety in the lesions that fundamentally affect the parotid gland; however, we consider
that it should be performed routinely since it is the only way to acquire experience for
executing it and improve the interpretation.
