ABSTRACT
Abdominal laparoscopic surgery is a procedure actually safe, this minimally invasive technique potentially offer decreased operation time, decreased morbidity, and decreased length of hospitalization stays; however, there are still some risk inherent to this surgical technique, like visceral injury, minor and major vascular injury, intraperitoneal adhesions, pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax and subcutaneous emphysema. Laparoscopic surgical treatment for rectal prolapse is a well accepted technique. One case of subcutaneous emphysema is reported; thorax, neck, face and upper extremities were involved, this patient was treated at the Juárez Hospital of México, México City, with the diagnosis of rectal prolapse, laparoscopic mesh rectopexy was performed. Some factors involved in this case were: hypercarbia, operative time greater than 200 minutes, use of six ports, and dissection of the retroperitoneum.
