ABSTRACT
Introduction. The cardiovascular illness associated to atherosclerosis and the periodontitis have a high prevalence in the world. In the last years many authors have out lined the influence that periodontitis has on the atherosclerosis events and that it can be considered as factor of risk on the same ones. Methods. Study case control in 160 patients of both sexes and 65 years of age or more, 80 of them that visited the dental clinic of the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, with recent event of cardiovascular illness associated to atherosclerosis, they constituted the group of cases. The group control was compound for 80 individuals without antecedents of this event type, belonging to Moncada and Rampa Policlinics. The studied variables were: age, sex, presence of chronic periodontitis and factors of atherosclerosis risk. Results. The masculine sex and the 75 year-old age or more, they were the most frequent, there were significant differences among the periodontitis presence in the case (31,9 %) groups and control (21,2 %), being more affected the first, the factors of atherosclerosis risk were more frequent in the case group, although alone there were not significant differences in the risk factors studied. Conclusions. The cardiovascular illness associated to atherosclerosis was more frequent in the masculine sex and in those of more age, the chronic periodontitis was associated with the group with antecedents of cardiovascular recent event.REFERENCES
