ABSTRACT
Introduction. Arachnoid cysts are mainly asymptomatic, and are mainly diagnosed accidentally, the most common are supratentorial, predominantly in males in the second decade of life, congenital cysts are mainly due to defects of the arachnoid membrane, a number minor are secondary causes of infection, trauma or tumors, arachnoid cysts are mainly filled with cerebrospinal fluid and the diagnostic standard is magnetic resonance.Clinical case. Male, 13 years of age, with no relevant personal history, who went to the emergency department after cranioencephalic traumatism and loss of left hemibody strength. A simple skull tomography was performed in which arachnoid cyst was observed.
Conclusion. Arachnoid cysts represent 1% of all brain masses, are asymptomatic in their entirety, or with general symptoms that does not raise suspicion of the disease, so their diagnosis is mainly accidental, however in symptomatic patients or with large cysts, should be treated as soon as possible, since there is a risk of presenting a mass effect, spinal herniation and death.
