ABSTRACT
Introduction: The prevalence of mental disorders in
Mexico comes from the National Survey of Psychiatric
Epidemiology (ENEP) in 2003. In this survey, Jalisco
(central-west region) has a higher prevalence of
mental disorders in life (36.7%). However, we do
not have our own study that includes the different
economic regions.
Aims: To know the prevalence
of mental disorders in Jalisco and the mental health
infrastructure on it.
Method: A randomly selected
1819 subjects were administered the Network
Questionnaire for the Detection of Common Mental
Disorders (CRD) in the 12 economic regions of
Jalisco. The inventory of the infrastructure and human
resources with which the state has an exprofeso
designed format was made.
Results: The 23.9% of
the population of the State of Jalisco presented any
of the mental disorders evaluated. The most frequent
mental disorders are: Anxiety (16%), depression
(4.4%) and alcoholism (3.2%) of the population.
There are three regions with high prevalences such
as the North (57%), Sierra de Amula (41.8%) and
Valleys with 32.2%. The Southeast, South, North
Coast and Western Sierra regions had prevalences of
mental disorders lower than 10%.
Conclusions: The
prevalence of mental disorders in Jalisco is similar to
the rest of the country and to other countries. There
are differences between their different economic
regions. The most prevalent disorders are anxiety,
depression and addictions.
