ABSTRACT
The solitary pulmonary nodule corresponds to a frequent incidental finding
in the radiological images of the chest, which has been increasing in recent
years. It can occur in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, and is
associated with a wide range of etiologies, both benign and malignant.
There are certain risk factors, such as age or smoking, and specific
characteristics of the nodule related to its size, growth and radiological
appearance, that are strongly associated with malignant disease. Currently,
the pulmonary nodule approach is regulated by various international
guidelines, which agree on the need for adequate stratification of individual
risk to propose diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up options. The Mayo
Clinic malignancy probability model continues to be the most accepted
method for this function in patients with and without risk factors.
