ABSTRACT
Anemia is a major global health problem and is quite common in the obstetric practice. Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia during pregnancy, and is associated with serious maternal a fetal complications. Its prevalence is higher in developing countries, especially because of its socioeconomic and nutritional status. The clinical presentation is similar to that of a normal pregnancy, and that is why active surveillance is required. The diagnosis is confirmed by laboratory tests; a low hemoglobin and serum ferritin are diagnostic of iron deficiency anemia. Early and effective treatment decreases the associated complications; and must be individualized. Oral iron is the first-line therapy despite being associated with a high level of gastrointestinal adverse effects, while intravenous iron therapy is a good alternative for the management of iron deficiency anemia after the second trimester of pregnancy.REFERENCES
