ABSTRACT
Background: Melioidosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and many
species of animals, it is caused for gram-negative bacillus
Burkholderia pseudomallei.
Clinical case: A female 57-year-old patient was admitted for a clinical picture of
five days of febrile peaks of 39°C associated with chest pain, dyspnea and daily bowel
movements. In the physical examination with decrease of vesicular volume in apex
of right lung. The chest radiograph showed a radiopacity that was better compromised
with the right lung; however, due to the results of the computed tomography
a pulmonary abscess was considered and antibiotic treatment was changed and a
pulmonary drainage was done. Finally, the cultures demonstrated the presence of
B. pseudomallei, for which the antibiotic treatment was adjusted, obtaining an adequate
clinical evolution of the patient.
Conclusion: Melioidosis has an incidence of 21 new cases per 100,000 people per
year, affecting when there are risk factors such as diabetes, alcoholism, chronic lung
disease, thalassemia, chronic kidney disease, cancer, use of radio or chemotherapy,
and consumption of glucocorticoids, among others.
