Occlusal splint as an alternative treatment for bruxism

ABSTRACT
Introduction: bruxism is considered a repetitive parafunctional muscle-mandibular activity, characterized mainly by dental clenching and/or grinding that causes pain in the patient and tooth wear.Case Report: 37 years old, white race, female patient, with a history of high blood-pressure who went to the dentistry prosthesis clinic at Hermanos Cruz polyclinic for presenting sensitivity to thermal changes, mobility, pain at the mouth opening and sensation of tiredness in the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint. During the clinical examination she presented pain that increased with function and appeared spontaneously. The patient had undergone dentist treatment one month earlier, consisting of the placement of dental filling; since then she has referred that the contact between the teeth is different, that this filling streaks first. She also suffered a family loss that caused her nervous alterations and insomnia, so she received medical and psychological assistance, period in which non-functional occlusal wear facets appeared, so she is referred to the prosthetic office. Eccentric bruxism was diagnosed. Satisfactory results were obtained after the identification of the cause and its elimination.
Conclusions: an adequate functional rehabilitation was achieved with the occlusal splint, therapy for the control of stress, anxiety, and occlusal adjustment, exposing the satisfactory evolution on the part of the patient with the treatment conducted.
