ABSTRACT
Rheumatic fever is the result of the body’s autoimmune response to a pharyngeal infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A Streptococcus. The risk factors associated with its etiology are diverse, poverty and social disadvantage are considered They are among the most important factors for developing acute rheumatic fever. Regarding age, the incidence is higher in children aged 5 to 14 years. Currently, the diagnosis of rheumatic fever is based on a set of criteria, that is, the Jones criteria, in its latest review, published in 2015. It is usually treated by the use of benzathine penicillin G, in addition to an early prevention that includes the improvement of socioeconomic status and the prevention of overcrowding that reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
