ABSTRACT
The neonatal endocarditis occurs in 2 forms: The noninfected and infective form. Neonatal infective endocarditis has been described traditionally as a rare and almost uniformly fatal disease. With the prolonged survival of critically ill infants, the increased use of intravascular catheters and availability of two-dimensional echocardiography, there has been marked rise in the reported incidence and/or recognition of this disease. Neonatal endocarditis most commonly occurs in older, premature newborn. The variable clinical feature of neonatal endocarditis are often non-specific, mimicking those of septicemia or congenital heart disease. We report a case of neonatal endocarditis of fungal etiology, in a preterm newborn, according the Daher and Bekowitz suggested criteria.
