ABSTRACT
Introduction: Medical practice necessarily combines life sciences with humanism; it is science and it is art at the same time. The introduction of living donor laparoscopic nephrectomy opened the doors of minimal access surgery for kidney transplantation. Objective: To comment on the humanistic aspects related to living donor nephrectomy performed by minimal access surgery. Methods: A search of documents related with the topic that had been published from 2005 to 2018 was made in specialized databases as MEDLINE, PubMed, ScieLo, LILACS and LIS. Results: Renal donation of living persons is a special procedure, since it is a healthy individual who altruistically gives up his kidney in order to provide a much better organ than the corpse donor, to improve the quality of life of a person who needs it. Health professionals should be characterized by humanitarian service, which leads to the improvement and development of novel surgical techniques with the sole purpose of providing the donor with greater security and meet the expectations of the recipient. Conclusions: Living donor nephrectomy by minimal access techniques represents an act of medical humanism, due to the advantages it offers both for the donor and the recipient. The current state of art has allowed the advancement of science to gain respect for the kidney's donor, whom disinterestedly provides the recipient of benefits and a longer life expectancy.REFERENCES
