ABSTRACT
Transfusion of red blood cells is performed to re-establish oxygen-carrying capacity; however, this intervention can be delayed and made at significantly lower hemoglobin levels than those conventionally considered if microvascular function is maintained by means of high viscosity plasma expanders. Albumin combined with polyethylene glycol and alginates has been found to be effective in maintaining capillary function in extreme hemodilution and hemorrhagic shock.
