ABSTRACT
Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is one of the most common diseases in humans and is a major health problem with very high economic costs.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of treatment with pulsed electromagnetic fields on moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia according to the international scale of prostatic symptoms.
Methods: A randomized, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted in 120 patients with clinical and radiological diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia and moderate symptoms. They attended the natural and traditional medicine practice of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery between September 2016 and February 2017. The sample was divided into two groups of 60 patients. The members of group 1 or control did not receive specific treatment but expectant behaviour with hygienic-dietary indications. The members of the second group were given 30 sessions of pulsed electromagnetic fields before and after three months of treatment. In both groups, the international scale of prostate symptoms, the IIEF-5 erectile dysfunction questionnaire, specific prostate antigen and the degree of prostatic hypertrophy according to the volume calculated by abdominal ultrasound were applied.
Results: The group treated with pulsed electromagnetic fields was statistically (p = 0.00) superior in all measured parameters with respect to the group that received expectant behavior. No adverse events were reported.
Conclusions: Therapy with pulsed electromagnetic fields is safe and effective in benign prostatic hyperplasia with moderate symptoms according to the international scale of prostatic symptoms.
