ABSTRACT
The identification of individuals through DNA analysis is performed by typing genetic markers. STR markers are used to estimate the frequency of a genetic profile. Profiles based on PCR amplification of STRs have the advantage of being sensitive because their repeats generate short alleles, being useful for specimens in poor condition or degraded. Three STR loci were used in this investigation: TPOX FGA and D18S51, because they generate well established polymorphic alleles and the genetic variability of these loci can be checked in the population of Coyopolan, a town of very old Totonaco origin; toltecs would have arrived there after the destruction of Tula in 1116;, due to its forested geography, it has become a conserved population (Government of the State of Veracruz, 1998). Blood samples were collected from 186 random individuals, DNA extraction was performed, PCR amplified, products were visualized on agarose gels and sequenced to identify alleles. The three STRs in this population indicate low heterozygosity with respect to that observed in the Mexican population; and based on the value obtained using chi square(5.9› 3.84) the population is not in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium for these markers. It is proposed to expand the study, in order to identify individuals from this region, which is a great help in forensic medical research.
