ABSTRACT
Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon, for industrial use as an organic solvent. It is one of the main components of lacquers, paints, glues, adhesives, inks and cleaning liquids, which are products of easy access and low cost. Toluene is considered by consumers as a harmless, recreational or party drug. Alterations due to habitual consumption of toluene occur in the central nervous, cardiopulmonary and renal systems. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman, a solvent consumer for 5 years, who entered the emergency department with drowsiness, dehydration, vomiting and muscle weakness; it evolved into cardiopulmonary failure and death. The clinical presentation and postmortem findings coincided with previously reviewed cases. A toxicological chemical study was carried out in blood and tissues, showing a concentration of toluene in blood higher than previous reports in the literature.
