ABSTRACT
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) was identified in 1989 by Houghton et al.1 with cloning techniques of its genome. The HCV infection is a public health problem because it is the main cause of chronic liver disease and death. A proper understanding of the behavior of hepatitis C by medical staff in blood banks is very important; transfusion of blood products means a high risk of transmission of HCV infection before screening tests were available. Currently, there are serological and molecular tests in the Blood Banks, which allow us to identify infected donors, in order to avoid the administration of dangerous blood components and send donors with hepatitis C infection to clinical services for evaluation and antiviral treatment of hepatitis C.
