ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the neonatal intensive care units, several invasive procedures are used to save the lives of newborns at risk of complication and even death. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge of nurses on complications associated with invasive techniques.
Methods: A multicenter, descriptive and evaluative study was conducted with 111 nurses working in different neonatal services in Havana. A survey, previously validated by a group of experts, was applied to these nurses in 2017. The level of knowledge on complications associated with the use of invasive techniques in neonates was evaluated, based on the training courses received on invasive techniques; knowledge on complications in conventional mechanical ventilation, vascular access complications and drugs that should be used in the event of a complication (paths and types of medications). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the qualitative variables. The results were presented in frequency tables.
Results: 57.7% of the investigated nurses have not received courses on invasive techniques. Most do not associate complications related to conventional mechanical ventilation. 100% know the most frequent complications related to vascular accesses and 88.3% master the correct administration of drugs.
Conclusions: There is a significant lack of knowledge on the complications associated with invasive techniques in the services studied, which could be due to the need for a systematic education in the care practice of this specialty.
