ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the results of applying shock wave treatment or iontophoresis in patients diagnosed with calcified tendonitis of the supraspinatus. Methods: An experimental study was conducted in 82 patients, of both sexes, diagnosed with calcific tendinitis of the supraspinatus, they were assisted in the Rehabilitation Service at CIMEQ Hospital, from January 2016 to January 2018. They were divided into two experimental groups treated with shock waves and iontophoresis (2% acetic acid). All subjects were evaluated before and after the treatment using Constant scale, EVA, radiography and ultrasound. Contrast hypotheses were performed.
Results: Before treatment, patients of both groups started with severe pain (7.9 ± 1.8 points control group and 8.2 ± 1.2 experimental group), poor functional status (42.9 ± 32.1 points control group and 31.9 ± 22.4 experimental group), presence of medium calcifications, (8.9 ± 7.2 mm control group and 6.5 ± 4.2 mm experimental group). At the end of the treatment similar results were observed in patients of both groups, but results were discretely higher in the group who received iontophoresis treatment (80.5%).
Conclusions: Both treatments were equally effective for symptomatic relief and reducing calcification in calcified tendonitis of the supraspinatus.
