Factors associated with the proper use of prenatal care in 13 municipalities of Bolivar, Colombia

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Failure of prenatal visits in a pregnant woman, involves many risks. Personal, family and social variables determine regular attendance at these consultations; therefore, they are key to the structuring of maternal and childcare services aspect.Objective: To determine the factors associated with adequate use of prenatal care for pregnant women in 13 municipalities in the department of Bolivar. Colombia.
Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study. 6265 Women population; sample of 661 pregnant 13 municipalities of Bolivar, selected by cluster sampling. It was used a survey to socio-demographic and obstetric gynecology characterization, the other to evaluate prenatal assistance proposed by the National Demographic and Health Survey (ENDS) of Colombia and several scales to measure factors associated in the literature. Descriptive statistics was applied and OR were calculated to determine the association between the variables, using the statistical program SPSSS 20.
Results: 53,26 % of women reported adequate use of prenatal care. Older than 23 years, (OR 1.4 CI: 1.1 - 1.9); have higher secondary studies, (OR 1.6 CI: 1.2 - 2,3); having a husband, (OR: 1.9 CI: 1.2 - 3.0); perceived family support (OR 3.2 CI: 1.1- 9,2); have a planned pregnancy (OR 2.2 CI 1,5 - 3.0); be employed (OR 2.3 CI: 1.2 to 4.2); be affiliated health (OR: 3.8 CI 1.2 -11.8); and belong to a small family (OR 1.3 CI: 1.2 - 1.8); are factors associated with the appropriate use of birth control.
Conclusions: Protective factors associated with proper implementation of the prenatal controls are personal, family and socio-emotional health.
