Migraine: treatment of acute crisis and prophylactic pharmacotherapy

ABSTRACT

Headache is the number one cause of consultation in the Neurology services, and one of the most frequent reasons for consultation on General Medicine. Migraine is considered the most disabling type of headache at a social, economic and psychological level. Symptoms usually last 4 to 72 hours, causing a pain of characteristics: unilateral, pulsatile, that worsens before physical activity and that associates symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia. There are two main axes in the treatment of migraine: Acute treatment of migraine episode and prevention of new crises and reduction of symptoms. The pathophysiological mechanisms and semiology of migraine will not be discussed in this article.
