ABSTRACT
Introduction: Since ancient times there have been certain traits that define a man as a good soldier, that concept today is known as combat capacity and it is defined by three main variables: physical condition, available technology and psychological strength of the combatant. In the present investigation association between body mass index (BMI) and physical condition index (PCI) is searched for.
Objective: Establish a statistical association between the BMI and PCI.
Material and methods: Data was collected using a questionnaire designed and validated specifically for this investigation; PCI was measured by the Harvard short step test (HSST) and with the information collected a linear regression model with robust errors was developed.
Results: No statistically significant association was demonstrated between the PCI and the BMI (p = 0.284, 95% CI = 1.1-4.9). A statistical association with the PCI was found for the variables of «Role» and «Rank».
