ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multisystemic disease, prototype of autoimmune diseases, in which hematological manifestations are common and some even form part of its classification criteria. The presence of cytopenias in these patients is frequent, anemia is the main one between them. Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia may also be observed. All of them have multiple etiologies, although they commonly result from immunologically mediated destruction. In some cases these manifestations may be due to other etiologies, such as infectious or pharmacological causes, so it is appropriate to rule them out. The management of each of these manifestations depends on their respective etiology, the expectant monitoring may be sufficient in some of them and in others the establishment of specific therapy is required.
