ABSTRACT
Introduction: alcoholic beverages have been present in all civilizations of the world. Today, alcohol abuse represents one of the main public health problems in all of America and Europe. Objective: to characterize the people who consume alcoholic beverages and belong to the Doctor’s Office number 13 of the José Ramón León Acosta Polyclinic in Santa Clara. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Doctor’s Office number 13 of the José Ramón León Acosta Polyclinic from February 2013 to May 2015. The universe consisted of all persons aged between 20 and 70 years. A non-probabilistic sample was selected. A review of medical records was conducted in order to obtain the information; questionnaires that contemplated the variables of the study, the identification of alcohol consumption disorders and diagnostic indicators were applied. Results: there was a prevalence of people aged between 20 and 30 years, among the males, and between 31 and 40 years among females. The predominant schooling was that of unfinished pre-university and three quarters of the sample were non-professional. The consumption of alcoholic beverages was harmful or abusive, with the use of alcoholic beverages and toxic habits associated with smoking. The social impact was family violence, divorce, separation, etc. Conclusions: the high prevalence of alcohol consumption is an alarming signal within the health situation, some psychosocial reasons among consumers contribute to its deterioration, and they decrease the life expectancy of the population and increase the harmful effects on the economic and social spheres.REFERENCES
