ABSTRACT
Introduction: the importance of osteoporotic fractures and the deterioration in the quality of life of patients leads to the search for rational solutions to the increase in this disease. Objective: to describe the main clinical-epidemiological characteristics of osteoporotic hip fractures due to falling in patients over 60 years of age. Method: a descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital in Santa Clara from January to December 2015. The study population consisted of 693 patients admitted with a diagnosis of hip fracture, the sample was 453 (inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken into account). A data collection model was designed, and it allowed data to be obtained by reviewing clinical histories. Results: female sex, age from 84 to 89 years and white skin color predominated, and there was a greater incidence in the Municipalities of Santa Clara and Cifuentes. The ingestion of alcohol and coffee were significant toxic habits. Personal pathological antecedents included hip fracture followed by epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. The drugs with the highest consumption were hypoglycemic and antiparkinsonian drugs. The most predominant type of fracture was the pertrochanteric and the most fractured hip was the right one; however, more complications were observed in the left one. Conclusions: hip fractures are common in the elderly and increase morbidity and mortality in those suffering from osteoporosis.REFERENCES
