ABSTRACT
Introduction: rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is an important cause of acute vision decline and visual impairment. Objective: to know the incidence of retinal ruptures associated with the course of symptomatic acute posterior vitreous detachment and the effectiveness of its immediate treatment as an essential conduct for the prevention of regmatogenous retinal detachment. Method: a descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was conducted in patients diagnosed with symptomatic acute posterior vitreous detachment at the Retina Consultation of the Ophthalmological Center in the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital during the period from January 2017 to December 2018. Results: the symptomatic acute posterior vitreous detachment predominated in patients older than 60 years (63.6%) and in the female sex (54.6%). In the study, 93.9% of patients reported photopsies, in 54.3% of the eyes that were examined some type of associated retinal rupture was found; horseshoe tears with flaps were the most representative (88%). The presence of pigmented cells in the anterior vitreous was found in 64% of patients with retinal rupture in the course of symptomatic acute posterior vitreous detachment; the presence of vitreous hemorrhage was observed more in eyes with retinal vessel avulsion. The vast majority of retinal tears (17) were located in the superior temporal quadrant. Conclusions: the presence of retinal rupture should be suspected in the course of a symptomatic acute posterior vitreous detachment and its immediate treatment is highly effective in preventing regmatogenous retinal detachment.REFERENCES
