ABSTRACT
Air leak syndrome is defined by the presence of air in a virtual cavity, it is caused by high volume or high pressings in the ventilator; some investigators have proposed the term volutraum. There is a classification accord with the affected area: Pulmonary interstitial emphysema, pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, pneumopericardium, pneumoperitoneum, subcutaneous emphysema and air embolism. The diagnosis is realized with the clinical picture of respiratory distress and it is corroborate with an X ray of the affected organ. All type of air leak, with exception of subcutaneous emphysema, had a high lethality when the diagnosis is not realized opportunely and received immediately treatment.
