ABSTRACT
Introduction: Childhood glaucoma is a disease associated with significant loss of vision. It is responsible for 5% blindness in children throughout the world. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images are used in the diagnosis and monitoring of children with visual impairment. There is little evidence in the literature of parameters in the Mexican pediatric population.
Objective: To evaluate the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), disc area and thickness of ganglion cell layer (GCL) by means of OCT in Mexican pediatric population.
Material and methods: The parents of the children who were selected were invited to sign the consent, visual acuity, macular OCT and optic nerve were taken. The thickness of GCL, thickness of RNFL and disk area were evaluated.
Results: Total 76 eyes of 38 individuals, 17 females, 21 males, age from 3 to 17 years. The thickness of RNFL: average of 101.11 ± 15.03 µm, area of disk 2.23 ± 0.34 µm, average of average CCG of 84.8 ± 6.86 µm. Discussion: Average numbers of CFNR, disc area and GCL were found similar to the literature, although with certain minimum differences suggestive of ethnic changes.
Conclusions: The usefulness of OCT in the evaluation and monitoring of pediatric patients to establish early diagnoses.
