Tumor calcinosis. Case report

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Tumor calcinosis is a rare disease characterized by calcium phosphate deposits that occur in previously healthy periarticular soft tissues under a disrupted chemical environment, unlike dystrophic calcifications that occur in previously damaged tissues and under a normal chemical environment. It is described as a complication in patients with renal failure that undergo dialysis, although it may also occur in patients with a certain hereditary predisposition. It may occur isolated, without an apparent cause. Clinical Case: The case reported is that of a young patient with kidney failure, under a peritoneal dialysis program, who developed a tumor in the left shoulder, diagnosed as tumor calcinosis. The patient was managed surgically and did well. Discussion. Tumor calcinosis is a rare disease that occurs as a complication in uremic patients undergoing dialysis. It may be properly managed with surgery. Knowledge on this condition should be disseminated and lead to revising the protocols for the management of uremic patients that seem to increase the incidence of tumor calcinosis.
