ABSTRACT
Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an endemic disease in Paraguay attributed in almost all cases to
Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis. The development of new diagnostic resources such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the subsequent analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) have made possible to know that some cases are produced by other species. We report two cases, a mother and her daughter, with typical lesions of cutaneous leishmaniasis whose PCR-RFLP studies revealed to be caused by
Leishmania (Viannia) lainsoni. The importance of the communication is to document that Paraguay, like other countries of South America, presents cases caused by this species.
