ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic-degenerative diseases in Mexico. During its course, developing com-plications constitute an important cause of prolonged hospitalization rates, work disability and loss of productive working years. Objective: To determine the main complications of DM as a cause of work disabil-ity. Material and method: A descriptive, observational, cross sec-tional and retrospective study was realized, where there were exam-ined occupational disability case files caused by DM and its complica-tions during the 2016 in Mexicali, Baja California (BC) of ascribed patients to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). Those who met inclusion criteria were selected. Descriptive statistics, including central tendency measures, percentages and frequencies were used with the SPSS v. 21 program. Results: Ophthalmologic, renal, and peripheral circulatory complications were the most common, being present in 42.8, 31.7 and 17.4 % of cases, respectively. Majority of patients were male (77.8 %). The mean age in which patients acquired disability status was 50 years; on average, 8.75 accumulated potential productive years were lost per worker. Conclusions: DM is currently a public health problem, which mainly affects working age patients, being that, ophthalmologic and renal complications are the primary causes for disability. It is necessary to create effective strategies for prevention and timely diagnosis in order to stop disease progression.REFERENCES
