ABSTRACT
Introduction: Rapid transportation of critically ill patients to tertiary care centers provide these patients with access to specialized diagnostic and lifesaving procedures.
Objective: To report nine-years experience of aeromedical transport in Mexico.
Design: Descriptive and retrospective study.
Setting: A private prehospital system of medical attention, Mexico City.
Patients: Sixty-eight aeromedical patients: 51 men (mean age 45.4 ± 20.5 yrs, range 12 hours to 78 yrs) and 17 women (mean age 38.3± 19.6 yrs, range 15 to 59 yrs) transported during a nine-yrs period.
Measurements and main results: The main medical problems of patients were: trauma 29 (42.6%) cardiovascular 17 (25%), gastrointestinal 7 (10.3%), neurologic disorders (7.35%) other illness 10 (14.7%). No patient died during transport. Of the 68 patients, 14 (20.5%) died in the hospital. The mean score of Rapid Acute Physiology Score (RAPS) for the survivors (n = 54) and non survivors (n =14) was 2.57 ± 3.84
vs 9.8 ± 3.12 points just before transport (p ‹ 0.0001), and 2.18 ± 3.85
vs 9.21 ± 3.73 points at the end of transport (p ‹ 0.0001).
Conclusion: In this study RAPS was a useful tool to predict the mortality of aeromedical patients.
