ABSTRACT
Objective: A comparison of the use of an intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA) and laryngeal mask airway with integrated fiberoptic system C-TRACH was made to observe the epiglottis and the vocal cords, where the endotracheal tube will be introduced, and determine which of the methods is more effective.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: Department of Anesthesiology of a private tertiary care hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: Eighty patients were randomly assigned in two groups after the induction of anesthesia. In group A the patients were intubated blindly through the ILMA, while in group B were intubated with direct sight of the epiglottis and vocal cords through the intubation mask, with LMA with integrated fiberoptic system and screen for direct observation. A sequence of manoeuvres was used after a failed intubation was detected. The number of manoeuvres used and the passed time were registered in both groups.
Results: The intubations were successful in all patients, but the mean time of intubation was longer in group A than in group B (38.3 ± 10.4
vs 26.4± 9.1 seconds); p ‹ 0.001). The number of patients that needed one or more manoeuvres of intubation was significantly higher in group A than in group B (76%
vs 42%); p = 0.001.
Conclusion: The use of C-TRACH is a more useful tool in the endotracheal intubation than the ILMA.
