Colchicine in the secondary prevention of coronary artery disease, a potential therapeutic option

ABSTRACT
Strategies for the reduction of inflammation and its effectiveness in preventing atherosclerosis and its complications is a currrent issue in cardiovascular research. Among the drugs aimed at modulating the atherothrombotic inflammatory process, colchicine, used since ancient times for the treatment of gout and more recently in the treatment of recurrent pericarditis and atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery, has emerged as a potentially useful agent for these purpose. Recent studies have evaluated the role of colchicine in the treatment of stable coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome and restenosis in patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention, with encouraging results. Its wide availability and limited side effects have contributed to several clinical trials are currently conducted in order to assess its usefulness in this context. In the present review we describe the general characteristics, the pharmacological properties as well as the available evidence regarding the benefits of treatment with colchicine in the secondary prevention of coronary artery disease.
